Goodyear Tires and the Goodyear Blimp

Goodyear ires will always be synonymous with the Goodyear Blimp. The classic airship is an indelible part of American popular culture primarily due to its omnipotent presence over football games in the United States over the course of several decades. Goodyear tires truly hit one out of the park with that marketing idea. But, the Goodyear Blimp did not originally start as a promotional vehicle for the Goodyear tires.

Goodyear Tires built their first blimp, The Pilgrim, in the 1920’s as an attempt to develop a legitimate and feasible method of transcontinental passenger transportation.

As history has shown, the blimp did not actually last long as a method of public and private transportation. The development of large aircrafts eclipsed blimps in that regard, but Goodyear Tires did continue to manufacture blimps. The total tally for blimps that Goodyear produced was up in the neighborhood of 300 then!

While the passenger travel conception of the blimp was something that Goodyear Tires would abandon, the company did start to work closely with the United States military and helped develop the blimp as a method of international spying. Originally utilized for this clandestine purpose during the Second World War, Goodyear tires continued to supply their blimps to the US government until the early 1960’s before the program was stopped.

When Goodyear became sponsors of NFL football, the Goodyear blimp began to make numerous appearances over the football stadiums. This achieved far greater public response than had Goodyear tires simply tried commercial advertising alone as the blimp quickly attained a mythic status with the audiences. This gave Goodyear Tires a huge advantage over competing tire companies.

Today, Goodyear no longer produces any more blimps and the ones that have not been decommissioned only total the scant number of 3. Despite the lack of presence in the world today, the Goodyear blimp remains an indelible part of pop culture and the greatest promotional tool in the entire of Goodyear Tires history.
